Periodontal disease is a serious condition in which the gum tissue surrounding the teeth becomes infected. One of the most effective ways to treat advanced stages of gum disease is a procedure called scaling and root planing. If you suffer from periodontal disease, our Wilson dentists can discuss whether this treatment might be right for you

Scaling and root planing is one of the most commonly performed dental treatments. The process is a minimally invasive and effective way to treat gum disease.

In scaling and root planing, also called deep cleaning, our dentists thoroughly clean your teeth down to the roots. By cleaning below the gumline, we can remove the calculus and bacteria that are causing infection and pain. We might administer a local anesthetic to ensure comfort during the procedure.

You may notice an increase in sensitivity immediately following your scaling and root planing appointment, but this is temporary. If the infection is severe enough, we might place some antibiotic fibers in the recesses between the teeth and gums. These speed the healing process and keep the infection from returning.

If you suffer from painful, swollen, or bleeding gums, don’t put off treatment any longer. Please contact Boles, Ham, Dixon & Boles today or call 252-291-2892 to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Wilson, North Carolina, and surrounding areas.
