What Causes Cavities

Cavities form because of tooth decay that gradually attacks your teeth. Keeping your regularly scheduled teeth cleanings with our Wilson dentists will help you combat the effects of tooth decay.

Tooth decay begins with the bacteria that live in your mouth. When you eat a diet full of sugary foods and don’t brush and floss each day, particles of food will stay in your mouth. The bacteria will start to feed on these sugars and form plaque on your enamel (the hard outer layer of your teeth).

When you allow plaque to build up by not brushing thoroughly or avoiding regular dental cleanings, it will start to create holes in your enamel. These holes are cavities, and they will continue to grow until you get treatment, usually a dental filling, to stop the cavity growth.

Left untreated, cavities can lead to tooth loss and gum disease. That’s why it is important to keep up with good daily oral hygiene and get regular dental checkups.
